Working alone Vs Getting work done

Working alone one has the world to himself/herself. One is totally isolated from the rigours of seeing the entire picture and y certain things are done the way they are done. In fact, most of them will even seem to be dead wrong but then that is the perspective from that position.

I would even say, in some circumstances, ppl work best when left  to work alone. But man is a social animal and whether we like it or not, we are part of the society. Doing work alone with total control on what one is doing is so simple.

Getting work done is a wholly different challenge altogether. Understanding people chemistry, egos, needs, wants, etc and then making them work toward a common goal is something that ppl have written tomes on. Most solo heros shirk from doing this as they think they are not cut-out for it. It is not a flaw with them. Just that sometime, one has to take the lead role by default and start with it however painful it might be along the journey.

Moreover, the sheer amount of trust that one puts in others hands too is a very big factor bcoz now, no one has the entire picture except for the guy delegating the task. Even the delegator for that matter, does not know the nitty-gritty of the work being done but knows just a basic loose outline sufficient to get the work done.

People micromanage and manage to screw up things so bad that a perfectly good team breaks , a perfectly good heart breaks. At the same time, people over macro-manage and have similar results. Managing a team is a tightrope walk which needs a very high level of understanding of humans.

It is frustrating at times but then that is how the things are. It requires a mixture of skills – anger, passion, impassioned-plea, laughter, judgement, sorrow, etc.

vtiger has been an interesting learning ground for me in these areas …
